SLJ-Beluga Whales: Step it Up

For the step it up activity this time instead of learning about Narwhals I had to learn about Beluga Whales! You might know that Beluga Whales use Echolocation to navigate their whereabouts and use this method to see the movements of their prey, but did you know that they can imitate human speech? And they can swim backwards?

The similarities these 2 have is they both live in the Arctic Waters, they both change colors throughout their aging and they both live in small groups or pods! Which one do you prefer, Narwhals or Beluga Whales? Let me know!

SLJ-Narwhals: Unicorns of the Sea

For todays SLJ activity I had to make a poster about Narwhals, or the Unicorns of the Sea! But did you know that their long spiral tusk isn’t actually a horn but its their tooth? They use it as a sensory device and it can grow up to 10 feet! Narwhals spend their time in the Arctic waters of Canada,Greenland,Norway and Russia. They can dive a mile deep down into the ocean, and whenever they need air they squeeze through the cracks in the ice above.

Are their other interesting facts that you know about Narwhals that I haven’t put on my poster? But if you’re curious, read my poster!

SLJ-Masks of Te Moana: Step It Up

For the step it up version I had to create a digital swimming mask. As you can see, I made 2! The one with the seahorse design is inspired by the goggles I used to have as a kid. As for the one with the octopus design, its inspired by the goggles my brother used to have. Did you know, that an octopuses arms have a mind of their own? We both lost our goggles, but thats because we’ve grown out of them. Sometimes, if we found our old goggles we wouldn’t even use them for their actual purpose! We would just watch them sink to the ground and see who can reach the goggles first.

What would you do for fun as a kid when you were at the swimming pools?

SLJ-Masks of Te Moana

New week and new SLJ activity, and for todays one I had to make a mask. Not just any mask, but an underwater themed mask. I could choose paints, pencil and coloured pencils to use for my mask. But I decided to make a collage mask. I tried to add as many details that connect to underwater objects and creatures. The tear falling down the black left eye was inspired by the squiggles of a coral reef, the aqua and black eyebrows are inspired by seaweed and you can obviously see the chinese inspired wave textures on the up left corner. The circle below the blue eye is a ramshorn snails shell, a jellyfish’s tentacles and finally the piranha fins. I added these specific items because they were the first to enter my mind once I saw the word “underwater”.

What are 5 items or underwater creatures that immediately pops up in your mind once the word “water” appears?

SLJ-Beach Mandala: Step It Up

For the Step it Up version we had 2 choices. Do it on paper or do it on a rock. I chose to do it on paper since its easier for me and its a bit too late for me to go outside in the middle of the dark. My Mandala is based on a flower, the background was added just for fun. Did you know that the word “Mandala” means circle in Sanskrit? Another fun fact is that Mandala drawing is considered a form of meditation. And one more fact, there are three types of Mandalas, Teaching Mandala, Healing Mandala and Sand Mandala. Which type of Mandala do you prefer?

SLJ-Beach Mandala

For this SLJ activity I had to go outside and use nature to create a beautiful Mandala. I used white rocks to help me get a clear image of the design I was going for, green rocks to help me know where to put the other items. Daises to help maintain the “peace” energy it was giving and finally the leaves to help give off “symbol” vibes. It was quite hard combining all of these together due to the wind blowing in my direction, causing the light objects to fly away. But once the breeze cooled down, I immediately assembled them and quickly took a photo.

I wish I added more, but this was all I could do for now. What else would you add if you had the time and the right amount of options?

(Took this photo at 6pm)

SLJ-Wavey Words: Step It Up

In the step it up version, I had to make a sentence that related to the water for each letter. This chart gave me ideas on how to start my Alliteration poem. What is Alliteration poem? You might ask, well an Alliteration poem is a poem that has multiple words that have the same beginning sound like “B/buh”.

Fabulous birds Flying Freely in the sky Feeling absolutely Fine in this Flaming weather, stealing Food during their Freedom then retrieve to the Fields. Whats your favourite letter?

SLJ-Wavey Words

Some might think thinking of words that relate to the theme is easy and arranging the words later on is hard. For me, its the complete opposite. I arranged the words freely and I had a clear image in my head. But, as for the “thinking” part words weren’t coming up to my brain. Mostly because I was thinking too hard but I soon managed to complete it.
